The Project

RK&K served as lead designer, with Clark Construction Group as contractor, for the $50+ million design-build project to install a pedestrian underpass beneath MD 355 (Wisconsin Avenue) to allow for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the corridor unencumbered by conflicts with motor vehicle traffic. Other major scope items include new deep high-speed elevators with emergency stairs and a new deep tunnel connection between the deep shaft and the existing WMATA Metro tunnel.

Additional improvements included roadway design, ADA enhancements and extensive utility design for relocations, new services, and impact avoidance counter measures.

“It was really cool to see the utilities supported in place where one could actually walk under the infrastructure.”

Elford Jackson, Utility Design Engineer
