The Project
RK&K served as the lead designer for the widening and improvements of a critical 12.8-mile stretch of I-40, spanning from the I-40/I-440/US 64 interchange in Wake County to north of Cornwallis Road in Johnston County. This corridor serves as a vital link for the region, connecting Raleigh and surrounding areas to I-95 and providing a primary route to North Carolina’s beaches and coastal destinations. With its strategic importance, the project was essential to supporting regional mobility, economic growth, and access to popular tourist locations.
The improvements were designed to address significant traffic congestion and safety concerns on this heavily traveled section of I-40. The project featured a variety of roadway configurations, including ten-lane, eight-lane, and six-lane sections, tailored to meet the specific needs of the corridor. Enhancing connectivity and accessibility, the design also included the modernization of six interchanges and the construction or rehabilitation of 15 bridges. These upgrades were carefully planned to accommodate current and future traffic volumes while improving safety for all road users.
In addition to the roadway and interchange enhancements, RK&K incorporated critical infrastructure improvements such as the replacement and extension of numerous box culverts, as well as the installation of sound barrier and retaining walls. These features not only contribute to the durability and functionality of the corridor but also help mitigate noise impacts on nearby communities. By addressing both immediate transportation challenges and long-term needs, this transformative project has greatly improved the efficiency and safety of a key regional transportation route.
