The Project
RK&K, in joint venture, provided comprehensive construction management, inspection, and support services for the $463M design/build replacement of the Harry W. Nice Memorial Bridge over the Potomac River between Charles County, Maryland and King George County, Virginia.
The original 1.9 mile bridge connecting southern Maryland to northeastern Virginia, built in 1939, carries more than 18,000 vehicles daily on US 301 over the Potomac River. The new bridge will replace the existing two-lane bridge with a wider, safety bridge, doubling the capacity with four 12-foot wide lanes with 2-foot shoulders, and address lane-shifting safety issues by incorporating all-electronic tolling (AET) and be able to accommodate tall vessels under its 135-foot clearance. The existing bridge will be demolished to create artificial reefs in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
The RK&K JV’s CMI team is providing CMI services for the replacement bridge, roadways, pavement, grading, embankments, retaining walls, utility relocations, stormwater management, drainage, erosion and sediment controls, trestle/causeway and staging area construction, signing, markings, traffic barrier, geotechnical testing, ITS and electrical systems, and the use of multiple barge-mounted cranes.
