The Project

RK&K designed a 3-span, 470-ft long, 45-ft wide, $29M new bridge to provide a connection to planned development areas along the Christina River in Wilmington, DE.

The selected final design consists of a post-tensioned, spliced concrete bulb-T superstructure on driven pile foundations. Approach roadway embankments utilized EPS Styrofoam and Deep Soil Mixing to reduce loads and settlements on weak soils.

Completed in 2019, this project includes a pedestrian underpass to maintain connectivity of an existing Riverwalk pedestrian path. Aesthetic finishes, lighting and railings were an important element for the project in the thriving Riverfront area.
