The Project
RK&K served as Lead Designer for one of North Carolina’s first progressive design-build transportation projects. The Bryant Farms Road Extension was a transformative initiative that connected Elm Lane to Rea Road, which significantly improved east-west mobility and reduced congestion in South Charlotte.
The project introduced a modern variable-lane roundabout, a new signalized intersection, and enhancements at Blakeney Heath Road to optimize traffic operations and safety. Designed with a complete streets philosophy, the corridor featured multi-use paths, dedicated bike lanes, curb and gutter, landscaped buffers, and decorative street lighting, which supported the City’s vision for a multimodal, pedestrian-friendly environment.
RK&K provided design oversight and multi-discipline engineering services including roadway design, traffic analysis, stormwater management, utility coordination, and environmental permitting. Collaboration efforts included targeted workshops to accelerate delivery, prioritize critical design elements, and ensure constructability.
Close collaboration with the City, contractor, and stakeholders ensured transparency throughout the entire design and construction process.
