The Project
RK&K is providing construction engineering and inspection (CE&I) project management, contract administration, and inspection services for the I-26 widening from MM 125 to MM 136. Work began in May 2024 and is scheduled for completion in September 2027. The project includes:
- Widening to both the median and outside shoulders 11 miles of interstate from a four-lane to a six-lane typical section
- Correcting sight distance on crest curves that do not meet design criteria
- Reconstructing two interchanges and associated access frontage road access points
- Reconstructing three overpass bridges
- Replacing an existing triple barrel crossline box culvert with a single mainline bridge
- Replacing an existing quad barrel crossline box culvert with a single mainline bridge
- Replacing three existing crossline box culverts
- Extending two exiting crossline box culverts
- Constructing various MSE walls
- Constructing a concrete median barrier for most of the corridor
The project challenges include:
- Interstate MOT and extensive night work including work zone limitations and limited median access
- Stability of the existing outside shoulders
- Phased replacement of crossline culverts
- Accelerated schedule (42 months) and rates of production needed to meet this schedule
- Project segmentation (12 separate locations for structures and box culverts) and the contractor’s staging approach required for maintaining traffic
- 420,000 estimated truck trips to construct the project
- Staging locations and access points for bridge construction
- Large volume of project documentation
- Utility relocations
- Use of I-26 as a coastal hurricane evacuation route that uses reversible flow during evacuations
When let, this $348 million project was the largest design-bid-build project in SCDOT history. I-26 is a major South Carolina economic corridor, connecting Upstate manufacturing (e.g., the world’s largest BMW plant) with the third largest container port on the east coast in Charleston. It is also the access corridor to all of South Carolina’s Lowcountry beaches and coastal areas
