The Project
To address severe congestion and traffic safety-related issues, RK&K is providing engineering services to improve the intersection of Pelham Road at Haywood Road. In the project’s first phase, RK&K is providing traffic engineering services, including detailed crash analysis, traffic forecasting, and operational analysis.
- The crash analysis indicated a series of rear-end and angular crashes at the intersection with majority of crashes being property damage-only crashes.
- The existing condition operational analysis indicated that the intersection is currently operating at LOS E in the PM peak hour, and the traffic forecasting exercise yielded a growth rate of 2.5% compounded annually over 25 years. RK&K coordinated with stakeholders, including the SCDOT Planning Office, to get concurrence on growth rates.
- The No-Build condition operational analysis indicated high levels of delay and over 3,000 feet of queuing at the intersection.
RK&K developed several intersection improvement options, including alternative intersections like continuous flow intersection (CFI), quadrant intersection, and median u-turn.
As part of the next phase of the project, RK&K developed conceptual designs, costs estimates, and a benefit-cost analysis to identify the preferred alternative. RK&K also developed a detailed report summarizing all the project efforts, setting the stage for SCDOT to take the preferred alternative to final design. RK&K has also assisted SCDOT’s project management team with stakeholder engagement throughout the course of the project, including coordination with the Greenville-Pickens Area Transportation Study (GPATS), and the City of Greenville.
