Bridge Replacements
Construction Manager:

Bruce Rasmussen, PE

The Project

SCDOT selected RK&K to provide CE&I services to oversee all project management and construction activities on three US 301 bridge replacement construction projects encompassing five bridges:

US 301 SB (Bamberg Highway) Bridge over the South Edisto River and S-439 Bobcat Landing Road Bridge over Canal to the South Fork Edisto River

Traffic was shifted to NB US 301 to construct a new 630-foot bridge on US 301 SB over the South Edisto River and floodplain. The new bridge superstructure is a 260-foot continuous deck on AASHTO Type II prestressed girders across the main channel. Two 110’ continuous flat slabs and a 150’ continuous flat slab span the floodplain area. The main spans are 65’ long and are supported by four drilled shaft bents (60” diameter shafts). The flat slab spans range from 30-40 feet and are supported by nine prestressed concrete pile bents. The new Bobcat Landing Road Bridge is a single, 60’ cored slab deck span with asphalt wearing surface supported by two steel pile end bents. The new bridge was constructed on a new alignment just south of the existing bridge.

US 301 NB (Bamberg Highway) Bridge over Snake Swamp

Traffic was shifted to SB US 301 to construct a new 142-foot NB bridge. The new bridge consists of three prestressed concrete girder spans supported by two interior bents on prestressed concrete piles.

US 301 Bridges over the North Edisto River and the North Edisto River Swamp

These two bridges are being constructed in stages, maintaining two lanes of travel in both directions. The new N. Edisto River Bridge is 92 feet wide and 354 feet long. The superstructure consists of three modified bulb tee girder spans supported by two interior drilled shaft bents. The new N. Edisto River Swamp Bridge is 79 feet wide and 120 feet long. The deck is a flat slab supported by two interior drilled shaft bents (four-foot diameter shafts). End bents are supported on prestressed concrete piles.
