The Project

The goal of this project is to develop five new sections of I-26 (the Connector), which will be median-divided freeway extending seven miles connecting I-26 in southwest Asheville to US 19/23/70 in northwest Asheville. Once these segments are completed, I-26 will extend from Kingsport, Tennessee to Charleston, South Carolina.

As the lead designer on this progressive design-build project, RK&K is providing design and construction services necessary to add lanes to I-26/I-240 from south of SR 3548 (Haywood Road) to north SR 1781 (Broadway Street), and to design improvements to SR 1477 (Riverside Drive) from SR 1517 (Hill Street) to SR 1781 (Broadway Street).

RK&K’s design phase duties include design team management including in-house staff as well as subconsultants; attendance at meetings; roadway design; traffic engineering, analysis, and control; environmental engineering and permitting; structural and geotechnical engineering; hydraulics and permitting, erosion and sediment control design; pavement marking; signing; intelligent transportation systems (ITS); utility design; noise analysis; right-of-way coordination (ROW); signals and signal system timing; geographic information systems (GIS); and the preparation of CADD drawings.

In addition, RK&K is providing the following services during construction: project management; utility coordination; public involvement; survey and subsurface utility exploration (SUE) coordination; recording drawings; erosion control inspection; preparing RFI’s and construction revisions; and structural construction services.
