The Project
The Anacostia Riverwalk Trail in Washington, DC, is a significant enhancement to the city’s transportation and recreational infrastructure. RK&K’s engineers and environmental scientists designed and permitted four miles of this multi-use trail for the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), effectively connecting a 60-mile network utilized by both commuters and recreational users.
A key aspect of the project was the comprehensive environmental coordination. In collaboration with the National Park Service, over 2,300 trees were inventoried to ensure minimal impact on the existing ecosystem. Environmental permits were secured from multiple agencies across Maryland, DC, and federal levels. To mitigate effects on tidal and nontidal wetlands, waters of the U.S., and local flora, the design incorporated extensive bridging and a carefully planned layout. Where impacts were unavoidable, RK&K performed on-site wetland restoration and forest mitigation, demonstrating a commitment to environmental stewardship.
The trail has become a popular route, with over 4,000 cyclists and pedestrians utilizing it each week. This high usage underscores the project’s success in promoting sustainable transportation and providing a safe, scenic pathway along the Anacostia River.
