Water Pumping Stations

RK&K has extensive experience in the design of high-capacity water pumping facilities, supporting municipal and regional water systems with reliable, efficient solutions. Our portfolio includes:

  • Horizontal Split-Case Pumps: Single- and double-stage designs with side and bottom suction configurations, up to 100 MGD
  • Vertical Turbine Pumps: Deep- and short-column settings, enclosed tube and open-shaft designs, above- and below-floor discharge, with capacities up to 50 MGD
  • Booster Pump Stations: Enclosed “can” configurations with aggregate capacities up to 5 MGD
  • Submersible Well Pumps: Designed in various configurations for site-specific needs

We design systems for both constant-speed and variable-speed operation, with control strategies that include:

  • Manual and remote on/off control
  • Automated operation based on system pressure or tank levels
  • Emergency shutdowns triggered by low suction pressure, high discharge pressure, motor overcurrent, bearing temperature, or vibration

Water hammer mitigation is addressed through the use of cone or pump check valves, surge tanks, pressure relief valves, or combinations of these systems.

Wastewater Pumping Stations

With over 50 years of experience, RK&K has planned, designed, and delivered a wide range of wastewater pumping stations from small-scale systems to complex, high-capacity facilities. Our expertise includes:

  • Pump Configurations: Horizontal, suction-lift, vacuum-primed, close-coupled and extended-shaft vertical pumps, axial flow, vertical turbine, and submersible pumps (wet and dry-pit)
  • Packaged Pump Stations: Custom-designed for space-constrained or remote locations
  • Speed Control: Constant-speed and variable-speed units using VFDs and other technologies

Control systems are tailored to each facility and include:

  • Float, probe, air bubbler, pressure transducer, radar, and ultrasonic sensors for wet well level monitoring
  • Emergency shutdowns triggered by low wet well levels, motor overcurrent, high bearing temperature, or vibration
  • Full integration with SCADA and telemetry systems for remote monitoring and control

Hydraulic transients are managed through controlled valve operations and the use of air release/vacuum relief valves, surge tanks, and relief valves.

RK&K also designs a full range of supporting systems for pumping stations, including:

  • Mechanical screening, grinders, and grit removal systems
  • Actuation systems: electric, hydraulic, electro-hydraulic, pneumatic, and hydro-pneumatic
  • Odor control: activated carbon, biological and soil filters, ozone systems, and chemical scrubbers
  • Chemical feed systems for hydrogen sulfide control (chlorine, hydrogen peroxide, ferrous sulfate)
  • HVAC, ventilation, and dehumidification systems
  • Instrumentation and control systems
  • Emergency power: standby generators and dual power supply systems
