The Project
RK&K provided the Town of Cary with planning, environmental and design services for the NC 540 Western Wake Freeway / Morrisville Parkway. The Town proposed the construction of an interchange with Morrisville Parkway on NC 540, which was in the final stages of completion the vicinity of the project. This proposed interchange is positioned between the existing NC 540 interchanges at NC 55 to the north and Green Level West Road to the south and is included in the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization’s (CAMPO) Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP). During the planning phase of the project RK&K and our subconsultants completed preliminary designs, an Environmental Assessment (EA), and a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI).
For final design RK&K completed roadway design, hydraulic design including a new box culvert for a tributary to Panther Creek, structure design, signing, erosion control, ITS and toll plans. RK&K also managed subconsultants to complete surveys and basemapping, plat preparation for right-of-way and easements, geotechnical investigations and right-of-way acquisition for the Town.
One of the more unique aspects of this project is that the NTCA fiber optic trunkline drove the traffic management and construction sequencing for the project areas adjacent to NC 540. As the NCTA fiber could not be interrupted, widening and grading along northbound NC 540 had to be completed prior to installing the relocated NCTA fiber optic cable (opposite of the existing fiber along southbound NC 540). Once the relocated fiber was installed and made operational, the construction activities that impacted the existing NCTA fiber could begin.
