MD 213 Bridge Replacement Wins Innovation Award at MdQI Annual Awards of Excellence

RK&K’s MD 213 bridge replacement project won the MdQI Innovation Award at this year’s Annual Awards of Excellence.

RK&K’s MD 213 bridge replacement project over Mill Stream Branch for the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) won the Innovation Award at this year’s Maryland Quality Initiative Conference’s Annual Awards of Excellence.

MdQI Innovation Award Winner - MD 213 Bridge Replacement

Our team of professionals prepared contract documents for a replacement to the existing two-cell culvert carrying MD 213 in Centreville, which was built in 1912 then widened in 1945 on both sides with a concrete slab on timber piles. The replacement superstructure was built adjacent to the existing structure and moved in place using the innovative Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) technique of lateral sliding to accommodate traffic, concerns with phased demolition, and the geometry of the roadway. The replacement structure is a 74-foot, 2-inch-long galvanized steel girder bridge with semi-integral abutments.

Each year MdQI’s Innovation Award is given to a project that “best exemplifies the use of innovation in the planning design or construction project.”

RK&K’s work included geometric layout, abutment, and wingwall design, structural steel design, reinforced concrete design, and incorporating appropriate details for the superstructure to be moved into place. Unique design considerations included dynamic effects during the slide, bearing detailing and installation, integral backwall design, and accommodating the anticipated sequence of construction. A permanent steel sheet pile wall is present in front of each substructure unit to provide scour protection.

Each year MdQI’s Innovation Award is given to a project that “best exemplifies the use of innovation in the planning design or construction project. This could be a new innovation, an existing innovation but new to Maryland or a new application of a new or existing product or process.”
