The DC Water Resources & Site Development team recently attended a tour of the Alexandria, Virginia waterfront, visiting the completed Windmill Hill Park & future Waterfront redevelopment area.
The new Windmill Hill Park includes a living shoreline, new bulkhead, walking trails, dog park, natural habitat creation, streetside green infrastructure, and kayak launch along the Potomac River where there was previously a failing bulkhead and underutilized riverfront land.
Historical stones excavated from a waterfront development site now being used to create a temporary cost-effective bulkhead.
The RK&K Construction Management team, led by Patrick DiNicola, managed the project through many hurdles, including archaeological excavation and investigation of two buried vessels that temporarily halted construction.
The city is planning future waterfront projects to improve flood resiliency and create a redeveloped and elevated waterfront park at the heart of Old Town.

Meredith Upchurch and Ken Ellis attended along with participants from municipalities, contractors, and consultants, hailing from Fairfax County all the way to Henrico County.
