Tom Clinard, P.E., has joined RK&K’s Nashville Office as Tennessee Transportation Leader. A seasoned transportation professional with 27 years of experience across the southeast U.S, he ran a successful consulting firm before merging with an ENR 500 firm. Tom brings his vast experience and established relationships and initially will focus on growing the firm presence in Tennessee by leveraging our transportation services with the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), cities, and other municipal clients across the state.
A graduate of Vanderbilt, a shift in studies led Tom to where he is today, “My freshman year in college I mistakenly thought I was much more creative than I was, so I originally embarked on a journey to be a landscape architect,” he said. “Then I changed my major to civil engineering and the rest is history. It was also in my DNA as both my father and grandfather were civil engineers and highway designers for TDOT.”
Tom states that an industry challenge today is landing top tier talent in an industry that has seen a decline in graduates coupled with a robust infrastructure program in many parts of the country. “Over the years, I have engaged in various high school STEM initiatives and feel this is an area that we all have to join in to foster the next generation of engineers, scientists and planners,” he said.
Why RK&K? “Being in the industry for a number of years,” Tom said. ”I interacted with various RK&K staff either at conferences or other professional events across the southeast, and what I consistently encountered were extremely smart individuals with similar approaches to the business as myself – low key and low ego! A wise mentor of mine passed on this motto, ‘it’s all about relationships,’ and I agree we are truly a people business. That’s what gets me going every day.”
Tom is active in numerous professional organizations including American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA), American Society for Highway Engineers (ASHE), and the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA).
Tom and his wife Cynthia are parents of three children, and the whole family stays active in the busy Nashville area.
