RK&K has an immediate opening for an experienced Rail Design Engineer with general knowledge of CSX (whether that is construction or design or planning) to join our Rail/Transit team in the Baltimore, MD, Washington DC and Northern Virginia areas. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a variety of engineering projects focusing on rail design within a collaborative and inclusive environment. Essential Function
- Design rail/transit alignment plans, profiles, typical sections, cross sections, and site plans
- Conduct field investigations to gather data, including measurements, photographs, sketches, and surveys, and assess any necessary changes
- Perform design computations and quantity calculations, ensuring accuracy and compliance with project requirements
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including survey, drainage, traffic, structural, and geotechnical engineering to develop comprehensive design documents
- Inspect rail assets, assess condition, and design necessary repairs or improvements
- Develop concept rail/transit plans and conduct feasibility studies for new systems or modifications
- Coordinate reviews, designs, and submittals with CSX stakeholders such as utility companies and permitting agencies
- Knowledge of various types of on-track safety in controlled and non-controlled track areas
Required Skills and Experience
- Minimum 2 years of experience in rail and/or transit design
- Proficiency in MicroStation V8i, AutoCAD, or other drafting/design software
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Flexibility to work from either our Baltimore, MD, Fairfax, VA or Washington DC office
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Familiarity with AREMA, APTA, NACTO, and/or AASHTO Standards
- Prior experience working within a railroad company (CSX, NS, UP.)
- Understanding of rail/transit owner/host design criteria such as Amtrak, CSX, NS, WMATA, MTA (MD).
- Engineer-in- Training Certificate
- Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or related discipline from an ABET accredited institution.

Salary Range: 90K – 118K per year
